Royal Caribbean vs Carnival: Which Should You Book?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · Families and Comparisons

Royal Caribbean is worth prioritizing if a specific attraction or large ship layout is the reason for your cruise. Carnival is worth prioritizing if its included casual dining, entertainment or departure port suits your trip. Neither brand wins every comparison, and Carnival is not automatically cheaper. Start with two real sailings for your dates.

Compare ships at a similar scale

Royal's Icon and Oasis classes offer a different scale of venues from its smaller ships. Carnival also operates ships of different generations and sizes. Comparing a large Royal ship with a smaller Carnival vessel mostly tells you about those ships, not the whole brands.

List the three activities your group most wants, then check the exact ships. Royal lists activities such as FlowRider, waterslides and ice skating among included offerings on ships that have them. Check participation limits and any separately sold sessions. A photo of an attraction elsewhere in the fleet does not mean it is on your sailing.

Use the Icon and Oasis comparisons if those are the Royal ships on your shortlist. A smaller ship is not a guarantee of short queues, and a larger one is not a guarantee of crowding everywhere.

Food: choose the meals you will use

Both lines include main dining room and buffet choices, with additional venues varying by ship. Carnival's Guy's Burger Joint is an included lunch option where offered. Its ship dining pages distinguish included venues from restaurants with an extra charge.

For each ship, check the breakfast, lunch, evening and late meal options you would use without a package. A long restaurant count is less useful if most of the appealing choices cost extra or open at times that do not suit you. Ask about your dietary requirements separately from general food reviews.

Passenger comparisons disagree on food quality. Some prefer Carnival's casual choices and others particular Royal meals or venues. Treat those as personal experiences, not proof that one line has better food for everyone or that neither can disappoint.

Families and atmosphere

For children, compare age groups, opening hours, nursery arrangements and activity restrictions on the exact ship. For adults seeking quiet, inspect the cabin location and available adult areas. A line's party reputation does not predict the passengers or noise on your particular departure.

School calendars and sailing length can change the experience on either line. The family cruise guide helps turn those preferences into specific questions.

Compare the entire cost

Match the dates, nights, party size and cabin type, including whether the cabin is assigned or a guarantee. Add required taxes, service charges and the drinks, internet, dining and activities you actually want. Include travel to the departure port. Our extra cost checklist helps prevent a low headline fare from settling the decision too early.

Choose the sailing that covers your priorities at that total. There is no supported fixed price gap here, and paying more for one brand does not by itself buy a newer ship, better service or a better itinerary.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.

How these examples are calculated

One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation. Each group matches departure month, region, nights and cabin class, with at least three sailings per line and ten per line overall. Each group has equal weight. Pairwise comparisons reuse sailings and are not independent bookings. Routes, ships, exact dates and included benefits can differ; this is a catalog comparison, not a universal cheapest-line ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Carnival always cheaper than Royal Caribbean?

No. Compare real sailings with the same dates, nights, occupancy and cabin type, then add the extras you want. Promotions and the specific ship can reverse the result. A brand average or an old fare comparison cannot establish the cheaper choice for your own booking.

Which is better for children?

Compare the specific ships and your children's ages. Check clubs, nursery arrangements and height or participation limits for their preferred activities. An attraction that looks impressive in a fleet advertisement may be absent from your ship or unsuitable for a particular child.

Which line has better food?

Passenger opinions differ. Compare the included venues and menus you would use, especially lunch and late meals, and separate them from paid restaurants. A food review about one ship and sailing can help you choose, but it does not establish a fleetwide winner.
