Icon Class Ships Compared

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · Cruise Line Deep Dives

Choose between Royal Caribbean's Icon class ships by the route, homeport and features your group will use. As of September 2026, Icon, Star and Legend of the Seas are in service; Hero of the Seas is planned for August 2027. Their shared design does not make their shows, restaurants or itineraries identical.

Icon and Star: Miami or Port Canaveral?

Icon of the Seas is the original class ship, with Caribbean sailings from Miami. It is a starting point if your dates fit that port and you want the class's family neighborhoods and water attractions.

Star of the Seas began sailing from Port Canaveral in August 2025. Its named differences include Back to the Future: The Musical and the Lincoln Park Supper Club. The supper club is a dining purchase to price separately, not a reason to assume every restaurant is included.

For a Florida trip, calculate the airport or driving transfer and any hotel along with the fare. Star may suit a Central Florida holiday, while Icon may fit a Miami arrival. Our Port Canaveral arrival guide helps with that comparison.

Legend: Europe and a different Florida season

Legend of the Seas began its first Mediterranean season in July 2026, with Barcelona and Rome departures. Royal has announced Fort Lauderdale sailings beginning in November 2026, including six night western and eight night southern Caribbean trips. Confirm the actual sailing before treating that deployment as permanent.

Legend's announced headline experiences include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hollywoodland Supper Club and Royal Railway, Legend Station. Those offer a more useful comparison than a small difference in published ship dimensions. Check show schedules, reservation requirements and dining charges for your date.

Hero: a future option

Hero of the Seas is scheduled for Miami in August 2027. Royal's plans include nine pools, two of them in the adults only Hideaway area, and an Ultimate Family Treehouse accommodation. These are announced features of a ship still being built, not our review of an operating holiday.

If one of those additions is the reason for booking, confirm the specific room or attraction and read the terms for a launch delay. Our 2027 ship guide compares Hero with other announced arrivals.

What matters across the class

Compare the deck plan for the exact ship. Surfside targets families with younger children, while other attractions have age, height or other participation limits. A feature count is not useful if your children cannot use the rides they want.

Also check the view from your cabin. A balcony facing an internal neighborhood is a different product from an ocean facing balcony. Trace the walk from the room to your usual dining and activity areas; our cabin location guide explains what to look for.

Passenger reviews differ on how crowded these large ships feel. Compare recent reports about the spaces you will use and the season you are booking. Paying for the newest sister does not guarantee fewer queues. If the fare premium mainly buys features you will skip, include Oasis class ships in the same search.

How these examples are calculated

One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How many Icon class ships can I compare?

This guide covers three operating ships as of September 2026: Icon, Star and Legend. Hero is an announced August 2027 arrival. Future construction orders are not the same as ships already carrying passengers, and features advertised for Hero should be treated as plans.

Is Star the same as Icon?

They share the class design but differ in details and deployment. Star sails from Port Canaveral and has Back to the Future: The Musical and Lincoln Park Supper Club. Compare the full trip cost, current itinerary and venues you actually want instead of choosing solely by age.

Should I pay more for Legend or wait for Hero?

Only if the specific route, cabin or feature justifies the difference for your group. Legend offers different entertainment and seasonal routes; Hero adds announced features with a future launch. Compare the same occupancy and full trip cost, including separately priced dining or travel.
