What Costs Extra on a Cruise?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 28, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · First Time Cruisers

Drinks, gratuities, internet, excursions and specialty dining can cost extra on a cruise, but some fares include them. Start with your written package and add only charges that apply. There is no reliable single extras budget for every seven night trip.

Service charges and drinks

Check daily gratuities for your line, cabin and travelers, plus service charges on individual purchases. Age exceptions, prepayment and adjustment rules differ. Do not assume gratuities are absent from an advertised fare or that every charge can be removed.

Alcohol, soda, specialty coffee and bottled water may be separately priced or included. Compare a package with your expected eligible purchases, including service charges and cabin purchase rules. Carry on allowances are also line specific.

Internet, dining and activities

Internet plans differ in devices, data or minutes, streaming support and included access. Check your booking rather than assuming a satellite upgrade lowered the retail price. Ship wifi and maritime cellular service are separate charges.

Specialty dining can charge per guest, by item or through supplements. Mainstream ships also offer included meals. Choose the restaurants you want and check the complete price; there is no required number of paid dinners.

Excursions, spa treatments, photographs, laundry, arcade games and some attractions can add costs. Check opening hours, age restrictions and prices on the exact ship. Gambling is separate spending, not a predictable way to reduce your bill.

Children and travel to the port

Confirm children's program eligibility, registration and any nursery or evening charges. Do not count care as included until the arrangement fits your child's age and your plans.

Add transport, parking, transfers, hotel nights and any insurance you choose. Our New York terminal guide is one example of the costs that sit outside many cruise quotes.

Make the budget specific

List required charges first, then the optional purchases you intend to make. Check your onboard account during the voyage and question unfamiliar charges while staff can explain them.

Fare inclusions vary enough that two headline prices can be misleading. Compare the complete holiday in the cruise value guide before deciding which offer costs less.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget beyond the fare?

Use the charges for your booking rather than a general average. Start with any required service charges and transport, then add drinks, internet, dining and tours you actually plan to buy. Check what the fare already includes so that you neither omit an expense nor count it twice.

Can I remove automatic gratuities?

Rules differ by line, fare and booking market. Some service gratuities can be adjusted through Guest Services, while other charges are fixed or included. Raise service problems during the cruise and read the line’s policy. Do not budget on the assumption that every automatic charge can be removed.

Is bottled water included in the cruise price?

It may be extra, included in a package or part of the fare. Check your booking and the available drinking water options. If you use a refillable bottle, follow the dispenser instructions and hygiene rules, which may require filling a clean glass rather than putting the bottle beneath the nozzle.
