MSC vs Carnival: Which Should You Book?
Compare MSC and Carnival by the specific ship, dining arrangements and total trip cost. Use the measured fare comparison below to see which costs less in the departures we can compare today. That sample does not establish a winner for every route, cabin category or package.
Food and dinner arrangements
Both lines include main dining and buffet options, with additional venues depending on the ship. Carnival's Guy's Burger Joint is an included lunch option where offered. Check the places you would eat breakfast, lunch and a late meal, not simply the total number of restaurants.
MSC's current main dining guidance includes fixed Classic dining and flexible arrangements. Its Dine on Your Time option lets Bella and Fantastica guests select flexibility at booking where offered; seating is first come, first served and queues can occur. Aurea's My Choice dining is another option. Confirm what applies to your ship and booking rather than assuming every MSC passenger has a fixed dinner time.
Carnival also offers Your Time Dining as an alternative to assigned seating. Check which option your reservation holds and use the line's check in instructions; a preferred dinner arrangement can be subject to availability.
Ask about a large party's seating needs before paying. Flexible dining does not guarantee that a big group can arrive together and sit immediately. Our dining time guide helps compare the choices.
Use passenger reviews carefully
Reviews comparing the lines often disagree on buffet food, main dining and service. A traveler can prefer Carnival's dinner and MSC's buffet without that establishing a winner for every meal. Look for recent reports on your exact ship and itinerary, including what was included and what the reviewer bought separately.
Nationality is not a useful prediction of an individual crew member's friendliness. Ask about the language and programming available on your sailing if that matters to your group. Do not rely on a broad description of MSC as reserved or Carnival as loud to predict the whole trip.
Families need a ship checklist
Compare your children's club age groups, opening hours and the rules for their preferred pools or attractions. A family facility pictured in an advertisement may be on a different ship. For a multigenerational group, also compare walking distances, cabin location and spaces everyone can use together.
The first cruise line guide helps build that shortlist. Check the actual itinerary too: a similar departure port and price can hide different sea days, private destinations or hours ashore. Use the Caribbean route comparison to decide which trip appeals to you.
Compare equivalent quotes
Match dates, nights, occupancy and cabin type. Then identify the MSC experience level and any drinks or internet offer in its quote. Compare those benefits with what the Carnival fare includes, and add only the extras you will use. Service charges, paid dining, tours and travel to the terminal can change the final result.
For example, do not add a full drinks package cost to an MSC quote that already includes one, or treat a Carnival fare without drinks as equivalent without doing the calculation. Our drink package guide explains how to value it for your own habits.
Choose the cheaper complete trip when both meet your priorities. Pay more only for a route, cabin, facility or benefit you actually want. Neither a national style label nor a claim that one brand is always cheapest can replace that comparison.
What our fare data shows
MSC Cruises had the lower advertised fare in 36.1% of cross-line comparisons, averaging equally across 20 matched groups (0.1% tied). The sample contains 126 sailings from MSC Cruises and 265 from Carnival Cruise Line.
Sample scope: on MSC Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line.

Example fares from one matching month, region, length and cabin group:
- MSC Cruises: MSC Seaside · 2028-01-24: 7 nights from Miami, interior at $615.00 per person; $1,230.00 cruise fare for two guests sharing one cabin, taxes included. Observed 2026-10-16.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.
How these examples are calculated
One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation. Each group matches departure month, region, nights and cabin class, with at least three sailings per line and ten per line overall. Each group has equal weight. Pairwise comparisons reuse sailings and are not independent bookings. Routes, ships, exact dates and included benefits can differ; this is a catalog comparison, not a universal cheapest-line ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Is MSC cheaper than Carnival?
Use the dated comparison in this guide for the fares we can match today. It compares published prices, not passenger bookings, and similar length and region do not mean identical routes or benefits. For your own trip, match departure dates, cabin type and occupancy, then add any extras you would buy. The lower complete quote is the useful answer.
Does MSC require a fixed dinner time?
Not universally. Its current guidance includes Classic dining, Dine on Your Time for Bella and Fantastica where offered, and My Choice for Aurea. Confirm the choices available for your ship and booking. Flexible seating may involve waits and is not a guarantee of immediate service.
Which line has better food or service?
There is no dependable universal ranking. Read recent reports for the specific ship, distinguishing buffet, main dining and paid restaurants. Check menus and dietary arrangements that matter to your party. One passenger's preference or nationality based stereotype cannot predict every crew interaction or meal.
