Biggest Cruise Ships in the World

Royal Caribbean's Icon class occupies the largest cruise ship tier as of September 2026. Icon, Star and Legend of the Seas belong together at the top. Royal's investor fleet table gives all three the same gross tonnage, so declaring one the clear winner using a different marketing page would create a misleading ranking.

The largest ships by gross tonnage

Using Royal Caribbean Group's current investor table consistently, the leading group is:

  1. Joint first: Icon, Star and Legend of the Seas. Approximately 248,700 GT each.
  2. Fourth: Wonder of the Seas. Approximately 236,900 GT.
  3. Fifth: Utopia of the Seas. Approximately 236,500 GT.
  4. Sixth: Symphony of the Seas. Approximately 230,000 GT.
  5. Seventh: Harmony of the Seas. Approximately 225,300 GT.

Figures are rounded, and other official materials may use different specifications. This is a consistent source comparison of ships already in service, not a list of future ship orders. See our 2027 new ship guide for upcoming arrivals.

Size is not passenger capacity

Gross tonnage measures enclosed volume, not weight. It does not tell you how much outdoor deck space, pool space or accessible seating each guest gets. Passenger capacity is another measure: double occupancy assumes two guests per cabin, while maximum capacity includes additional berths. Comparing one ship's maximum with another's double occupancy produces a false result.

The Icon class comparison explains the ship differences behind the shared design. For the next size tier, use the Oasis class guide to compare venues and itineraries rather than assuming all sister ships offer the same holiday.

What a large ship changes for your trip

A bigger ship can give your group more choices without everyone doing the same activity. The tradeoff is distance: the cabin, dining room, pool and theater you use may be far apart. Before paying a premium, trace those trips on the deck plan and check which activities need reservations or have height requirements.

Passenger reviews of Icon disagree sharply about crowding. Some report easy movement through its neighborhoods; others describe queues at popular attractions. That is a reason to consider the sailing date and the spaces you will use, not to promise a ship this large always feels empty or always feels packed.

If your priority is seeing ports, compare actual time ashore and sea days first. If the ship's activities are the main reason for going, compare their restrictions and included costs. Our cabin location guide helps you trade a view or lower fare against noise and walking distance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest cruise ship in the world?

Icon class is the largest current tier. Royal Caribbean Group lists Icon, Star and Legend of the Seas at the same 248,663 gross tonnage in its investor fleet table. This guide groups them together rather than mixing different published measurements to manufacture an exact winner.

Does gross tonnage measure weight?

No. It is a measure based on enclosed internal volume. It is separate from a ship's weight, length and passenger count. It also does not measure how crowded a particular pool, theater or dining room will feel on your sailing.

Should I choose the largest ship?

Choose it if the activities, layout and itinerary suit your group at the quoted price. Check the deck plan and cabin location first. A size record cannot tell you whether you will enjoy the food, queues, route or time spent walking between venues.
