Kosher Food on Cruise Ships: A Line by Line Guide
Several cruise lines arrange kosher meals in advance, often using packaged entrees. That does not mean the ship has a kosher kitchen or that every meal, utensil and venue meets your required supervision. Ask for the current meal labels, preparation procedure and complete daily meal plan before booking.
Published request windows
- Carnival: limited frozen entrees described as Glatt kosher; three weeks before domestic sailings or eight weeks before Europe and Australia. Its help page says fresh meats and ship kitchens do not meet kosher standards.
- Disney: request through Special Requests in My Reservations at least 35 days before sailing. Passover requires ten weeks through the call centre.
- Norwegian: its kosher FAQ gives 30 days or 90 days for listed departures in Europe and the UK, Asia, Antarctica, parts of Africa and the South Pacific. Verify your itinerary.
- Celebrity: its current FAQ describes frozen prepared meals and requests 45 days for departures from the continental US, Puerto Rico, Alaska or Hawaii; 90 days for South America, Europe, Australia or Asia. Its New Zealand booking terms instead require 100 days for Australia, New Zealand and Asia; confirm the deadline in your own booking terms.
- Princess: written requests need 35 days for Alaska, Canada and New England, Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama Canal and Coastal Getaways; 65 days for other cruises.
- MSC: its international accessibility page lists packaged meals with 30 days notice and a charge of €25 or $30 per person per day. Published US page versions have differed on price. Obtain the price and availability for your reservation in writing rather than assuming either free meals or a universal charge. World Cruise special diets require three months; confirm booking market terms.
Royal Caribbean lists kosher meals without a meal charge and 45 days notice, extended to 90 for Europe and South America in one paragraph but Europe and Asia in another. Use 90 for those regions and confirm with the line. Passover requests need 90 days. The Royal guide explains its separate arrangements.
Virgin says it does not offer certified kosher or halal meals. The policies reviewed do not establish comparable provision on Holland America, Silversea, Explora, Regent or Oceania; seek confirmation rather than assuming luxury service includes your meal requirements.
Verify supervision and service
The current Norwegian kosher FAQ reviewed does not name Borenstein Caterers or Orthodox Union approval. Older supplier claims should not be repeated as current proof. Likewise, a line's use of kosher or Glatt wording is not this guide's independent inspection of a current certificate.
Ask for the label, supervising authority, packaging and heating process. Confirm whether you can inspect seals and which utensils are supplied. Discuss bread, drinks, breakfast, desserts and children rather than checking only dinner entrees. Passover requirements must be requested separately.
Specialist programs are a different purchase
A third party group operator may arrange dedicated dining or supervision on selected sailings. Ask for its actual contract, certifier, covered spaces, meals, price and cancellation terms. Do not infer that the entire ship follows those standards, or that an ordinary booking includes the group's dining.
Passenger forums can help identify practical questions about repetitive menus or receiving sealed meals. They cannot prove your supplier or supervision. Cruise Critic's dietary planning advice likewise recommends specific advance arrangements rather than relying on a general cruise reputation.
Bring confirmation to the ship
Meet the restaurant manager before your first meal and agree the daily ordering process. Confirm port days and excursions as well as dining aboard. If bringing your own food, obtain permission and check storage, reheating and border rules first; Carnival explicitly requires advance discussion of passenger supplied kosher meals.
Our Disney guide and Norwegian guide explain their request channels. A received form is not the same as approval of every item you need.
Frequently asked questions
Is a kosher cruise the same as a cruise with kosher meals?
No. A standard meal request may cover only packaged food, while a specialist operator may arrange dedicated dining and supervision under a separate contract. Check the actual scope rather than relying on the name of the ship.
Are kosher meals always complimentary?
No. MSC’s international accessibility page lists an additional daily charge, while published US page versions have differed. Confirm the price and availability for your own reservation in writing. A specialist kosher group program can also be a separate paid purchase.
Can I bring my own kosher meals?
Ask before sailing. Permission to bring packaged snacks does not establish permission for meat meals or an agreement to refrigerate and heat them. Ship policies and border restrictions apply, and any handling assistance should be confirmed in advance.
