Indian Vegetarian and Jain Meals on Cruises

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · Policies last confirmed Sep 5, 2026 · Dietary and Special Diets

Indian vegetarian dishes are available on some cruise menus, but a vegetarian label does not necessarily mean no eggs, onions, garlic or root vegetables. State your exact requirements when booking. Disney publishes a named Jain meal option on Disney Adventure; this review does not establish an equivalent promise across every other line.

Explain the ingredients you avoid

Diet labels are interpreted differently. Tell the line whether you eat dairy, eggs and honey, and list any vegetables or preparation methods you avoid. Jain observance can involve requirements beyond an ingredient list, so describe your own needs rather than relying on a generic definition.

Ask about stocks, sauces, bread, mayonnaise and pasta. A curry can contain an ingredient you avoid even when its visible vegetables appear suitable. Vegan food excludes animal ingredients but can still contain onion, garlic or potatoes.

What published menus can tell you

Disney Adventure: Disney's dietary FAQ explicitly lists Jain meals and asks for 35 days notice through its reservation or contact process. This is a ship specific option, not a fleetwide Disney menu. Disney is one of the lines tracked here.

Carnival: its special diets page names Indian vegetarian food, and sample main dining menus include an Indian vegetarian choice. Masala Tiger exists on selected ships, but offerings and charges vary by ship and meal. Neither the venue name nor its Indian cuisine establishes Jain or egg free preparation.

Royal Caribbean: its FAQ says vegetarian meals are available daily in the main dining room and Windjammer without a special request. That general provision does not promise a separate Jain meal or preparation process.

MSC, Norwegian, Princess and Celebrity: use their dietary contacts to ask about your specific restrictions. An onboard chef may be able to help, but do not treat a freeform request or another passenger's success as acceptance of your own booking.

Ask about variety, not just one dinner

Request examples of suitable breakfast, lunch and dinner choices over several days. Confirm whether snacks, desserts and children's portions are possible, and whether preordering is required. Ask how meals work on port days or at an excursion that includes lunch.

Recent Reddit accounts of Genting Dream describe a Jain section in its buffet, consistent with its operator's advertising of a dedicated section. That is a different operator and does not establish comparable provision on a ship with an ordinary Indian buffet. Fathom Fares does not track or quote StarDream Cruises.

Confirm before committing

Send the dietary team the ship, date and guest names with a clear list of acceptable and excluded ingredients. Ask for written confirmation before depending on the arrangement. MSC's US general request window is at least 30 days; Norwegian's is at least 45 days, while the exact request and itinerary can require more notice.

Meet the restaurant manager before your first meal and agree how orders will be handled. If the confirmed choices do not meet your needs, resolve that before departure. Bringing your own meals is not an automatic solution; check food, storage and border rules first.

Compare the ingredient distinctions in our vegetarian guide and vegan guide. The Disney dietary guide explains its named request routes.

Frequently asked questions

Does vegetarian mean no eggs?

Not necessarily. Ask for egg free food explicitly if that is your requirement, and check sauces, baked goods and pasta as well as the main dish. Explain any dairy or handling requirements at the same time.

Does Disney offer Jain meals on every ship?

The current dietary FAQ specifically names Disney Adventure, with 35 days notice. Do not extend that option to other ships without written confirmation from Disney.

Can I use the vegan menu for a Jain diet?

It may contain useful dishes, but vegan does not exclude onion, garlic or root vegetables. Give the dining team your actual ingredient list and ask which complete dishes meet it.

Before you rely on thisDietary policies, sourcing, and certifications change frequently and can vary by ship, region, and sailing. Always confirm your specific requirements in writing with the cruise line before booking and again before you sail.
