Christmas and New Year Cruises: What to Expect

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Oct 4, 2026 · Holiday and Seasonal Cruising

Expect a holiday cruise to combine the ship's regular facilities with whatever seasonal meals, decorations and events that sailing schedules. Check the actual program before booking for a particular tradition. A Christmas or New Year's departure does not guarantee the same celebration, crowd or price across lines.

Confirm the events you care about

Royal Caribbean's 2026 holiday guide describes examples such as seasonal dining, Christmas activities and New Year's celebrations. Treat these as that line's examples, not a promise for every ship or date. Check whether an event requires a reservation or separate payment.

If a religious service, Santa visit, special menu or midnight celebration matters to you, ask about the specific sailing. Also check where the ship is scheduled to be on the holiday; a port day changes the time you have aboard.

Plan meals and family time

Review dining arrangements and any reservation window. A paid specialty meal is optional unless you want that experience; its availability is separate from included dining. Confirm children's club ages, hours and care fees rather than assuming a holiday extends them.

Passenger reports on Reddit describe different holiday experiences, including ships with many families. Those reports do not establish a universal crowd forecast or prove that a particular brand will be quiet.

Price the guests, cabin and dates you can actually use. Add transport, hotels, gratuities and chosen packages. Neither a fixed holiday premium nor a cheapest booking interval follows from the word Christmas.

For a family, confirm approved occupancy or a connected pair using the family room checklist. If suitable space matters more than waiting for a possible sale, weigh that tradeoff explicitly.

Keep expectations specific

Check dress suggestions for the scheduled events and pack accordingly. Do not assume fireworks, a particular party or uninterrupted access to outdoor spaces. Buy a cruise whose ship and itinerary you want even if the seasonal program changes.

Frequently asked questions

Will the ship already be decorated before Christmas?

It may be, but timing varies. Check the sailing’s information or ask the line; a November passenger’s report does not establish a fleetwide decoration date.
