How Much Does a Cruise Really Cost Per Person?
Your total cruise cost is the booking price plus charges excluded from that fare, travel to the port and optional spending. Use a quote for your actual cabin and guests; doubling an advertised fare is not a complete holiday budget.
A hypothetical seven night budget
This example is for two adults sharing one cabin. Every amount is hypothetical and in USD, not a current quote or a claim about average cruise spending.
- Cabin including taxes and port fees: $2,000.
- Daily gratuities, $20 × 2 guests × 7 nights: $280.
- Flights: $600.
- Hotel and transfers: $250.
- Drinks, dining and internet: $250.
- Excursions and meals ashore: $300.
- Travel insurance: $120.
Total for both travelers: $3,800.
That is $1,900 per person, or about $271 per person per cruise night when the listed holiday costs are allocated across seven nights. The $1,000 per person cabin price is only part of this example. Replace every line with your own quote and plans.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.
How these examples are calculated
One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation.
Avoid counting the same cost twice
Check whether your fare already covers taxes, daily gratuities or a package. Royal Caribbean separates daily crew gratuities from service charges on certain purchases. Virgin's current booking rules differ, with older unmodified bookings retaining their original gratuity inclusions. A headline package benefit does not tell you its checkout price or every exclusion.
Third and fourth guests, children and solo travelers need their own quoted total. Do not multiply a double occupancy price by your guest count and assume it is a valid family or solo quote.
Choose the extras before buying them
Set amounts for drinks, paid dining, internet and port days. Check package costs against what you would use. Our drink package calculation and extra cost checklist cover the details.
Reddit passengers describe small onboard purchases exceeding their planned budget. That is a reason to track your spending, not a reliable average to copy. Keep a separate allowance for unexpected travel costs.
What Fathom Fares' price covers
Our standard comparison fare is per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing a cabin. It comes from a dated nightly observation, not a live booking quote. Confirm the current price, availability, exact occupancy and inclusions before reserving. The price tracker guide explains those limits.
