When Do Kids Sail Free on Cruises?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Oct 4, 2026 · Families and Comparisons

Kids sail free applies only when a child meets a particular offer's age, cabin and sailing rules. It normally waives an eligible additional guest's cruise fare, not the entire cost of their trip. Enter every guest's age and compare the final family price before assuming the promotion applies.

Two offers with different age limits

Royal Caribbean's published Kids Sail Free description applies to eligible guests aged 12 or younger sharing a reservation with at least two other guests. It requires qualifying occupancy and sailing availability. The current promotion terms have blackout dates, including major holiday and school vacation periods.

MSC's US offer checked October 4, 2026, has a September 15 through October 7, 2026 booking window. It permits eligible children aged 17 and under as third or fourth guests on selected sailings. Government taxes and fees remain payable, and Yacht Club cabins are excluded from that offer. The booking window is not the same as the sailing dates.

These dated examples explain how eligibility works. Offers can expire or change; check the terms available when you book. Do not assume a Carnival promotion has the same eligibility because another line uses a similar headline.

Guest position matters

A child sharing with one adult may occupy the second guest position and therefore fail an offer intended for third and fourth guests. A cabin for two is not made eligible simply by adding a child to a search.

Check the room's approved capacity and sleeping arrangement. Some categories cannot hold four guests, and overall capacity can limit extra occupants even when an apparently suitable cabin remains. Compare family cabin configurations before choosing a fare.

Count the costs that remain

Review taxes, required fees, gratuities, transportation and any optional purchases. Gratuity age rules differ by line and region, so do not assume every infant pays the adult rate or that a free fare waives it.

Kids club participation is a separate inclusion question. Nursery care and certain late sessions can cost extra. The youth program guide explains why the child's age affects more than the cabin quote.

Compare two real family totals

A hypothetical family quote of $3,600 with free child fares is more expensive than a comparable $3,200 quote without that label. The difference is $400 for the party, regardless of how the cruise fare is distributed among guests. These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not live prices.

Ask for the best available total under the offers you qualify for. There may be no option to price the identical inventory with every promotion switched off, so compare usable alternatives rather than a fictional undiscounted price.

Recent MSC passenger discussions show confusion when an advertised sale does not apply after selecting dates or adding children. That makes the final passenger breakdown worth checking, but does not prove every advertised offer is misleading. Use the complete cost comparison and save the applicable terms with the booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can one adult and one child use a third guest offer?

Not simply because the second traveler is a child. Offers aimed at third and fourth guests require those guest positions and qualifying occupancy. One adult and one child may both pay the first two guest fares. Enter the complete party and ages before relying on the headline.

Are school holidays always included?

No. Royal Caribbean's published terms exclude a number of holiday and school vacation periods, and other lines choose their own eligible sailings. Read both the booking window and departure restrictions. An offer running during summer does not mean it covers every summer sailing or the following school break.

Do children still pay taxes and gratuities?

The offer may leave government taxes and fees payable even when cruise fare is zero. Gratuities follow the line's separate age, itinerary and fare rules. Check the passenger breakdown and service charge policy rather than assuming every child pays the adult amount or that free fare removes all charges.
