Is a Cruise Worth It?
A cruise can be worth it if you enjoy ship life, its itinerary suits you and the complete cost compares well with an alternative holiday. It is less suitable when you want unrestricted time in one destination or dislike the ship's schedule. Neither a cruise nor a resort is universally better value.
Compare a real alternative
Quote the same travelers and dates, with accommodation and meals you would actually choose. Check the fare inclusions before adding drinks, gratuities, internet or activities. Some packages include them and others do not.
Add flights or driving, transfers, parking and hotel nights on both sides. Compare cancellation conditions too. The cruise and resort comparison explains why an advertised nightly price alone is insufficient.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.
How these examples are calculated
One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation.
Decide whether you want the schedule
A cruise can visit several places without changing hotels. Port hours are fixed and calls can change, so it does not provide the freedom of staying ashore. Read the daily itinerary rather than assuming every day brings a new island or every stop is only a few hours.
Sea days give time for the ship's facilities. If those do not appeal, a lower fare will not necessarily make the holiday better. Look at the activities and dining venues on the actual ship.
Check the travelers' needs
For families, verify children's program ages, hours and charges. For a group, compare cabin arrangements and whether everyone wants the same pace. Solo travelers should use a quote for one rather than doubling a lead fare and assuming that is the only option.
If motion sickness concerns you, discuss prevention with a clinician or pharmacist and read the seasickness guide. A short trial voyage cannot predict how you would feel in different conditions.
Spend where it matters
Compare cabins, dates and optional purchases without assuming an interior or older ship always wins. Keep the features you need and remove purchases you would not enjoy. Ways to compare cruise costs can help you find a suitable trip without relying on an invented average saving.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cruise cheaper than an all inclusive resort?
Either can cost less. Use current quotes for matching dates and travelers, then add travel and the extras each offer excludes. Compare the room standard, included activities and cancellation terms too. There is no reliable blanket rule that a cruise is cheaper once all expenses are counted.
Are cruises good value for families?
They can be, if the cabin arrangement, meals and activities suit the actual family. Check children’s program ages, hours, availability and fees before counting supervised care as a benefit. Quote every traveler and compare transport costs with another holiday your family would enjoy on the same dates.
When might a cruise be the wrong choice?
It may be the wrong fit when you want unrestricted time in a destination, dislike the available ship activities or need arrangements that cannot be confirmed. Compare the actual itinerary rather than a generic image of cruising. A cheap fare is not good value if the trip does not suit you.
