Oceania vs Explora Journeys: Which Fits Your Trip?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Sep 5, 2026 · Cruise Line Deep Dives

Choose Oceania when its itinerary and cabin price fit your trip and you are comfortable selecting its drinks amenity, excursion credit or a credit for declining both. Choose Explora when a larger entry suite, broadly included drinks and a family booking matter more. Neither line has a defensible universal food or value ranking.

Policies below were checked September 5, 2026. Match the ship and fare on your quote before applying them.

Families now face a different choice

Oceania accepts new reservations only for guests aged 18 or older, effective January 7, 2026. Existing reservations with younger guests made before that date are honored. That means a future Oceania sailing is not guaranteed to have no children aboard.

Explora welcomes families and offers connecting suites. Its published Nautilus Club program serves ages six through 17; younger children's arrangements depend on the ship and program. Check the exact ship's childcare and suite occupancy before booking. For a new trip with children, Oceania is no longer the alternative it was in older reviews.

Compare usable cabin space

On Oceania Vista, a standard Veranda Stateroom measures 291 square feet including the veranda. On EXPLORA I, an Ocean Terrace Suite measures 377 square feet including its terrace, with about 301 square feet indoors and 75 outdoors. The advertised difference is roughly 86 square feet overall, not 86 extra square feet inside.

Those are specific ship and category examples. Do not apply Vista's dimensions to every Oceania vessel, or compare an Oceania inside cabin with an Explora terrace suite as if the accommodation were equivalent. Check the bed arrangement, bathroom, storage and location on the actual plan. Our cabin comparison explains which differences matter beyond the category name.

Oceania's drinks choice is not an open bar

Oceania's Your World Included covers specialty restaurants, standard shipboard gratuities, WiFi, specialty coffees and other nonalcoholic drinks. Its Luxury of Choice amenity offers selected wine and beer by the glass at onboard venues and through room service during operating lunch and dinner hours or shore excursion credit. Both guests in a cabin must select the same amenity by final payment. You can also request a credit for declining both amenities; get that alternative priced on the quote.

The drinks choice does not include cocktails throughout the day. Oceania lists its broader Prestige Select package at $79.95 per person per day, with a 50 percent upgrade discount for guests who selected the wine and beer amenity. Confirm the final package charge and service terms on your sailing.

Explora includes a wider drinks selection throughout the day, including spirits, wine and champagne, plus WiFi and onboard gratuities. Premium bottles outside the included selection still cost extra. If you rarely drink alcohol, assign little value to that difference; use your own habits in the drink package calculation.

Dining is included, with exceptions to check

Oceania includes its specialty restaurants. Explora includes venues such as Sakura, Marble & Co. Grill, Med Yacht Club and Fil Rouge, as well as dining in your suite. Explora's Anthology tasting menu is an additional purchase, as are certain other culinary experiences.

Included dining does not promise your preferred reservation time every evening. Look at the restaurants on the specific ship, the reservation process and how often you expect to repeat a venue. A label such as best food at sea cannot answer those questions.

In a July 2025 Cruise Critic comparison, one passenger who had sailed both praised Explora's buffet while describing the overall dining comparison as close. A March 2026 Reddit discussion included praise for Explora's food alongside reports of service misses. These are individual experiences, not controlled comparisons or a fleet ranking.

Price the itinerary you will use

Compare port hours, overnight calls, sea days and the cost of reaching each embarkation port. A lower nightly fare may buy less time in the places you wanted to see. A larger suite matters more if you plan to spend several afternoons aboard.

Explora's standard inclusions do not make its Destination Experiences free. For Oceania, check whether your quote includes excursion credit and what it can buy. Unused excursion credit can become shipboard credit for the same voyage; any unused balance is lost when you leave the ship at the end of the cruise. Keep independent tours in the budget whichever line you choose. Our excursion comparison helps separate tour preference from package value.

What our fare data shows

Oceania Cruises had the lower advertised fare in 77.4% of cross-line comparisons, averaging equally across 6 matched groups (0.0% tied). The sample contains 24 sailings from Oceania Cruises and 52 from Explora Journeys.

Sample scope: on Oceania Cruises, Explora Journeys, with suite fares.

Fares observed 2026-10-16.

Example fares from one matching month, region, length and cabin group:

  • Oceania Cruises: Oceania Allura · 2027-08-13: 7 nights from Civitavecchia, suite at $3,862.00 per person; $7,724.00 cruise fare for two guests sharing one cabin, taxes included. Observed 2026-10-16.
  • Explora Journeys: EXPLORA I · 2027-08-16: 7 nights from Civitavecchia, suite at $4,685.00 per person; $9,370.00 cruise fare for two guests sharing one cabin, taxes included. Observed 2026-10-16.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.

How these examples are calculated

One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation. Each group matches departure month, region, nights and cabin class, with at least three sailings per line and ten per line overall. Each group has equal weight. Pairwise comparisons reuse sailings and are not independent bookings. Routes, ships, exact dates and included benefits can differ; this is a catalog comparison, not a universal cheapest-line ranking.

A hypothetical seven night comparison

These are invented budget figures, not available fares. Assume two adults sharing one cabin have tax inclusive cruise totals of $7,000 for Oceania with the wine and beer amenity and $8,200 for Explora. Assume flights, hotels and tours cost the same for each trip.

If the couple expects $600 of additional drinks spending on Oceania that would be covered by Explora's included selection, the adjusted comparison becomes $7,600 versus $8,200. Explora's remaining premium is $600 for the couple, about $43 per person per night. Decide whether the specific suite and onboard experience justify that amount.

If they drink only what Oceania's amenity includes, the gap remains $1,200. If they choose excursion credit instead, redo both the tour and drinks budget. If they decline both amenities, compare the adjusted fare after the credit for doing so. Value onboard credit only against intended purchases; a credit that reduces the fare directly is a separate saving.

No matching pair of current, available cabin quotes was verified for this article. Public brochure fares, expired offers and waitlisted categories cannot establish which line is cheaper for your dates. Compare a final available quote for the same travel party, currency and cancellation terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book Oceania with my children now?

New Oceania reservations made from January 7, 2026 require guests to be at least 18 years old. Earlier reservations that include younger guests are honored, so children may still be aboard some sailings. Explora accepts family bookings, subject to its age requirements, cabin occupancy and availability on the chosen voyage.

Is every meal and drink free on Explora?

A broad selection of restaurants, dining in your suite and beverages is included. Anthology and certain other culinary experiences cost extra, as do premium drinks outside the included selection. Check your specific ship's dining list and reservation terms; an included restaurant does not guarantee any table or time you request.

Does a lower Oceania fare mean better value?

Only if it covers the trip you want. Match the cabin's indoor space and balcony, travel dates, itinerary and cancellation rules, then add the drinks, excursions and travel costs you would actually pay. Someone content with Oceania's included beverages may reach a different answer from a cocktail drinker who wants Explora's larger entry suite.
