Set Dining Time vs Anytime Dining: Which Should You Pick?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · Food and Dining

Choose fixed dining if you want a predictable dinner time and a regular table arrangement. Choose flexible dining if you want to vary dinner around port calls and activities. Flexible dining can still require reservations or involve a wait; fixed dining does not guarantee that every meal finishes quickly.

What fixed dining provides

Traditional dining assigns a sitting and table arrangement. It can simplify meeting up with family and communicating preferences to a regular service team. Confirm your assigned sitting, since the time you request when booking may not be available.

For groups in several cabins, ask to link the reservations and request dining together. Check that everyone has compatible dining selections. A large group cannot assume it can combine fixed and flexible bookings at the door.

Flexible does not mean instant seating

Royal Caribbean's My Time Dining lets guests choose their dinner time within the venue's operating hours. The line strongly recommends reservations and says you can request the same waitstaff, subject to availability. Its FAQ states that My Time Dining uses the same main dining room menu as traditional dining.

Recent passenger discussions describe both successful repeat table arrangements and waits. Those experiences help identify questions to ask, but do not support a universal wait estimate. A reservation time, party size and sailing's demand can all affect the evening.

If a show matters, allow a margin around dinner and tell the server your timing needs. Do not book a tight connection on the assumption that an entire seated meal will take a fixed number of minutes.

Lines use different systems

Norwegian's Freestyle Dining has no fixed dining time or preassigned seating. Reservations for relevant venues remain subject to availability. Princess offers traditional seating, reservable flexible dining and walk in dining, with details depending on the ship.

Disney uses rotational dining, moving guests through assigned restaurants while the serving team stays with them. Your seating time and restaurant rotation appear in the Navigator app onboard. That is a different arrangement from choosing any main restaurant at any time.

Meals, children and special diets

The dining schedule is separate from what food your fare includes. A specialty restaurant or premium dish can carry a charge regardless of your main dining selection.

For children, compare the sitting with their normal mealtime and the actual kids club schedule. For allergies or religious diets, request accommodations before sailing and reconfirm with the dining manager. A regular team may make communication easier, but allergy procedures still need checking each meal.

Ask onboard whether a change is possible if the arrangement does not work. Capacity determines the answer. On a night when you prefer something else, check the buffet hours or book a specialty dinner under its separate terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can flexible dining guests request the same server?

Royal Caribbean says My Time Dining guests can request the same waitstaff, subject to availability. Other lines and ships have their own arrangements. Ask the dining team early if continuity matters to you, and do not assume a repeated reservation automatically guarantees the same server or table.

Can I switch my dining selection onboard?

Ask the dining team when you board. Changes depend on available places and may not accommodate your preferred time or entire group. If you are traveling across several cabins, arrange linked dining requests beforehand and verify the assignments rather than expecting to combine different bookings at dinner.

Is the menu better with traditional dining?

Royal Caribbean says My Time Dining and traditional dining share the main dining room menu. The choice is principally about scheduling and table arrangements. Do not extend that statement to every restaurant on every line; Disney rotations, specialty venues and ship specific dining concepts can have different menus.
