Is Room Service Free on a Cruise?

Sometimes. Disney and Holland America include many room service choices, while other lines charge for delivery, menu items or both. Continental breakfast can be free even when later meals cost extra. Check your ship's current menu and your fare benefits before placing an order.

Examples of different charging systems

• Royal Caribbean publishes a $7.95 service fee plus 18 percent gratuity for applicable orders, or $9.38 after rounding. Complimentary continental breakfast and qualifying suite benefits have separate rules.
• Carnival offers complimentary continental breakfast items from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. alongside paid selections. Its later menu is priced by item. Australia cruises have a different policy with charges for all room service items.
• Disney includes many room service dishes in the fare, with charges for certain snacks and drinks. Holland America also advertises included and separately priced options.
• Princess distinguishes its $14.99 per person, per voyage OceanNow access charge from a $5 charge for each order placed by stateroom phone. Qualifying Plus and Premier packages cover those delivery fees; priced food and drinks still depend on package coverage.
• Virgin's Ship Eats delivery costs $10, waived when the order includes at least $10 of paid items. RockStar guests have a delivery waiver.

These published rules were checked in September 2026. Currency, itinerary and package terms can differ. Use the order total for your booking rather than an old photograph of a menu.

A delivery waiver is not a free menu

Three separate amounts can appear: the food or drink price, a delivery charge and a percentage service charge. A suite or package might waive only one of them. A drink package also may exclude room service even when it covers the same drink at a bar.

Virgin's waiver is useful if you already want a qualifying paid item. Buying a $10 item solely to avoid $10 delivery does not reduce the bill. The same principle applies when comparing Virgin fare benefits or Princess packages.

Timing and ordering matter

Use the method your ship specifies. Carnival's instructions include ordering by phone; other ships offer an app, television or breakfast order card. Do not assume every method has the same menu or fee.

Recent Princess passenger discussions describe mixed delivery experiences, including delays and limited selections. Those reports cannot predict your sailing, but they are a reason to leave time before an excursion rather than relying on delivery arriving just before departure. Service may also be limited on the final morning.

Check the gratuity before adding another

An extra tip is your choice. Look at the receipt to see whether a service charge has already been added, and check how the line describes it. There is no single mandatory cash amount for a room service delivery across cruise lines.

If convenience is not worth the charge, consult the daily schedule for included food venues. A fee on room service does not mean you must pay to eat elsewhere.
