How Do Cruise Gratuities Work and Can You Remove Them?
Cruise gratuities can mean two different charges: a daily amount for onboard service and a percentage added to purchases. Some lines let you adjust the daily amount onboard. That does not mean you can remove the service charge from every drink or spa bill.
Budget the daily amount
As checked in September 2026, Royal Caribbean publishes $18.50 per guest per day for standard cabins and $21 for suites. Carnival lists $17 and $19 respectively, with children under two exempt. Norwegian lists $20 for Club Balcony Suite and below and $25 for Suites and The Haven, applying from age three; Hawaii has an additional service charge tax.
For two adults sharing a standard Royal Caribbean cabin for seven nights, that is $259. Include it in your trip budget unless your booking already covers it. Check the policy for your booking market and fare before multiplying an advertised rate.
Can you change or remove it?
Royal Caribbean's published policy allows guests to modify daily gratuities at Guest Services before the morning of departure from the ship. Carnival allows onboard adjustments before disembarkation. Norwegian asks guests to report service problems so staff can address them, and permits adjustment if concerns remain unresolved.
Report a service issue when it happens. Keep the revised statement if a charge changes. These policies do not establish a universal right to a refund after the cruise or an automatic refund for prepaid charges.
Purchase gratuities are separate
Royal Caribbean currently adds 18% to beverages, specialty dining and room service purchases, and 20% to spa and salon purchases. Its FAQ says these purchase gratuities cannot be removed. Other lines have their own percentages and included packages.
Check the total before signing a receipt. A blank space for an extra tip does not mean the existing charge has disappeared. Use the full checkout amount when comparing drink packages.
Check what your fare includes
Virgin's old advice that tips are always included is no longer reliable for new bookings. Its current FAQ lists a daily service gratuity of $22 per Sailor onboard or $20 prepaid, introduced with bookings from October 7, 2025. Confirm older reservations against their original terms. Virgin says it does not add further gratuities to drinks, dining or spa services.
Luxury fare inclusions and mainstream bundles also vary. Read the actual invoice before adding a daily amount a second time. Prepaying spreads the cost ahead of departure; only treat it as protection against an increase when the line expressly honors the earlier rate.
Cash tips and crew pay
Extra cash is a personal choice, separate from understanding the line's charges. Published policies describe pooled distributions or compensation support, but do not reveal every employee's contract. Reddit discussions disagree sharply about what removal does to wages; those assertions cannot establish the payroll arrangements on your ship.
If you plan extra tips, include them in your cash budget rather than assuming a fixed amount is required for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Do children pay daily gratuities?
Age rules differ. Carnival excludes children under two, while Norwegian applies its daily service charge from age three. Do not assume a discounted child fare also means discounted tips. Check the age rule and amount for each guest on the actual reservation.
Does eating only at the buffet remove the daily charge?
No automatic exemption follows from skipping the main dining room. Daily charges cover more than your assigned waiter; Carnival expressly says they apply regardless of dining choice. If you want an adjustment, follow the specific line’s onboard policy rather than assuming the charge will vanish.
Should I prepay or pay onboard?
Compare the two quoted totals and the refund terms. Prepaying can make budgeting easier, and Virgin currently advertises a lower prepaid daily rate. Other lines may charge the same either way. Check the reservation first so you do not pay separately for gratuities already included in a package.
