Is Wifi Free on a Cruise and Does Your Phone Work at Sea?
Ship WiFi and mobile phone service are different. An internet plan may be included in your fare or sold separately; connecting to the ship's WiFi does not necessarily give you internet access. Your normal mobile plan may charge separately if your phone uses a maritime cellular network at sea.
Use airplane mode, then enable WiFi
To avoid unintended cellular use, put your phone in airplane mode and turn WiFi back on to connect to the ship. Confirm that cellular service remains off. Download documents, maps and entertainment before you leave.
Check your carrier's cruise coverage before enabling mobile service at sea. A land based international allowance does not establish that maritime calls, messages or data are included. In port, coverage and charges still depend on your plan and destination.
Check what the internet plan permits
The ship's app may work on its local network without a paid internet plan. That does not mean other apps, email or websites are included. Read the fare and plan terms for streaming, calls, device limits and access hours.
Some fares include internet. For example, Virgin's current fare choices have different WiFi tiers and device allowances. Other lines sell separate plans. Check the reservation you are buying rather than assuming every cruise charges the same way.
Carnival's current internet terms say connection speed varies, only one device may be used at a time per plan, and VPN connections are not supported. Do not assume that buying a higher tier removes a published restriction.
Do not rely on a guaranteed connection
Starlink on a ship does not promise an uninterrupted work call or a fixed speed at your device. Passenger discussions describe different experiences. If you need connectivity for work, check the remote work requirements and have a backup plan.
Compare the price for the full voyage and the number of devices you need. Follow the provider's sharing rules; a plan advertised for one device is not automatically a plan for everyone in your cabin.
Frequently asked questions
Can I receive a login code without mobile service?
It depends on how the account sends its code. Set up an accepted backup login method before sailing; an SMS code may not arrive while cellular service is off.
