How Fast Is Cruise Wifi Now With Starlink?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · Cruise Curiosities

There is no single honest speed figure for cruise wifi with Starlink. The ship's connection is shared, and your package, onboard signal and current network conditions affect what reaches your device. A Starlink label does not promise home broadband performance, uninterrupted video calls or access to every application.

What changed with Starlink

Starlink provides the ship's link to the internet through satellites in low Earth orbit. It does not replace the wifi network between your device and the ship, or the cruise line's package restrictions. Carnival Corporation announced completion of its fleet installation in May 2024. An older ship can therefore have Starlink; ship age alone is a poor way to judge connectivity.

The practical question is whether your task works on the plan being sold. For background on buying access, see cruise wifi and phone service.

Read a speed test carefully

A useful passenger report names the ship, sailing date, package, location onboard and time of the test. Download speed measures receiving data; upload speed matters when sending files or your camera feed. Delay and connection dropouts also affect a call. One fast test cannot establish reliability for a whole week.

A recent Utopia of the Seas Reddit discussion included reports of successful work calls alongside slow service and differing VPN results. We have not independently measured those connections. The disagreement is a reason to keep an outage plan, not to average the posts into a promised ship speed.

Buy for the task, not the satellite name

Carnival currently lists Premium as supporting video applications where coverage allows, but VPN connections remain unsupported. Its September 5, 2026 published starting price is $25.50 a day when bought before sailing for the whole cruise. A seven day example is $178.50. The separate onboard 24 hour option is $35. Your booking price and terms control; do not confuse a cruise long daily rate with one day of access.

What to do if it is slow

Pause optional downloads and backups, check that you are on the intended network and ask the ship's internet support team to check your plan and signal. Keep downloaded entertainment and travel documents available offline. Plan sea day activities that do not depend on a connection.

Frequently asked questions

How many Mbps will I get with Starlink on a cruise?

There is no dependable fleetwide number. Your package and the onboard network affect the speed delivered to your device. A dated speed test on your exact ship is useful context, but it cannot promise the same result on your voyage or even throughout one day.

Is Starlink free on cruise ships?

Starlink is the connection provider, not a promise of free passenger access. Internet may be included in a fare or sold separately. Check the actual package, device allowance and permitted applications. Free use of the ship app does not mean the rest of the internet is included.

Will Starlink let me use any VPN?

No. A satellite system does not override cruise line restrictions or employer security requirements. Carnival publishes that VPN connections are unsupported. Check the line and your company setup before relying on work access; another passenger connecting successfully does not guarantee the same result for you.
