Carnival VIFP Levels and the Move to Carnival Rewards

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Oct 4, 2026 · Cruise Line Deep Dives

Carnival replaced VIFP with Carnival Rewards on September 1, 2026. VIFP levels now explain your sailing history and transition benefits; they are no longer the main way to earn new status. The new program separates redeemable Reward Points from Status Qualifying Stars.

The former VIFP ladder

VIFP awarded one point per cruise day. Blue covered the first sailing, Red the second sailing through 24 points, Gold 25 through 74, Platinum 75 through 199, and Diamond 200 or more. These are historical VIFP thresholds, not the new program's star thresholds.

Your former VIFP number becomes your Carnival Guest Number. Keep your old account details and cruise history when checking the transition; starting a duplicate profile can make an account problem harder to resolve.

How Carnival Rewards differs

Eligible cruise fare and onboard purchases earn both Reward Points and Stars. Points can be redeemed under the program's rules; Stars determine tier status. They are different balances, so redeeming points is not the same as spending your status.

The first status earning window runs from September 1, 2026, through December 31, 2028. Later windows run for two calendar years. Eligible spending matters under this system, while lifetime cruise days continue to matter for separate milestone benefits.

Do not multiply the whole booking invoice by an advertised earning rate. Exclusions and allocation rules apply, including taxes and purchases funded with certain credits. Gratuities are eligible spending under the current FAQ. Credit card earning also has separate terms. Spending more solely to earn a perk is worthwhile only if the perk exceeds that extra cost.

Check your protected status and enrollment

Carnival says guests who reached VIFP Diamond by August 31, 2026, receive lifetime Diamond in Carnival Rewards. Former Platinum members retain that tier through 2028 and receive a 10,000 Star boost in later earning cycles. Check the protection and next earning window shown in your account rather than assuming every tier becomes permanent.

Participation requires enrollment and acceptance of the terms. Carnival's current FAQ says eligible Carnival Rewards Mastercard members are already enrolled under their card terms. Other guests should check their account directly. If you missed an enrollment message, ask Carnival to confirm your present status rather than assuming your history has disappeared permanently.

Recent Reddit discussions describe confusion about enrollment confirmations and which spouse receives card related Stars. Those are reasons to inspect each person's account; they are not evidence that every family's points should be pooled. Carnival states that accounts, Points and Stars are not transferable.

Cruises spanning the change

For a voyage beginning before September 1 and ending on or after it, Carnival retains VIFP benefits for that sailing and awards eligible new program earning for the full voyage. The current FAQ describes delayed posting for some precruise purchases during system updates, without the former September 30 deadline. Check the relevant purchase and sailing with Carnival if credit is missing.

Before booking again, compare the actual loyalty benefits with the complete trip cost. Royal Caribbean's program works differently, while an MSC status match requires its own application and approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer Stars to someone in my family?

No. Carnival says membership accounts, Points and Stars are individual and nontransferable. Check each guest’s account and the allocation rules for the purchases involved.
