Brooklyn vs Manhattan vs Cape Liberty: NYC Cruise Terminals Compared
New York area cruises use three separate locations: Manhattan on the Hudson, Brooklyn in Red Hook and Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey. The terminal follows the sailing you book. Choose your airport, hotel and transfer around that address rather than treating New York as one boarding point.
Manhattan Cruise Terminal
The terminal is on the Hudson at the west side of Midtown. For a stay with time in Manhattan, Midtown West can put your hotel on the same side of the city. Check the actual walk with your cases; a nearby hotel name does not remove avenues, traffic or the final pier approach.
Passengers arriving at Penn Station or Grand Central still need to reach the waterfront. Compare a taxi with the current subway or bus route and final walk. Official parking is on the pier roof, with vehicle entry at West 55th Street and 12th Avenue.
Brooklyn Cruise Terminal
The terminal is at 210 Clinton Wharf in Red Hook, with vehicle entry at Bowne and Imlay streets. Downtown Brooklyn can suit a hotel stay followed by a road transfer. Lower Manhattan can work if you plan to use the ferry, but include the journey from the hotel to the landing.
Take NYC Ferry to the Brooklyn terminal
NYC Ferry is a practical option from Manhattan. Choose the South Brooklyn service to Red Hook/Atlantic Basin. The landing is beside the cruise terminal, leaving a short walk to the passenger entrance. From Lower Manhattan, board at Wall Street/Pier 11; East 34th Street is another Manhattan boarding point on the current route. Check the departure serving Red Hook for your exact date, including weekend or holiday variations.
As checked September 5, 2026, a standard adult single trip costs $4.50. Buy a ticket in the NYC Ferry app or at a landing ticket machine before boarding. Subway and bus fares are separate. Budget time to reach the Manhattan landing and wait for the boat; the ferry ride alone is not the complete transfer.
Choose this option if you can handle your bags through the landing, gangway and final walk. Leave room in your plan for a later boat or a road transfer if service is disrupted or boarding is full. A taxi can suit heavy luggage or a starting point far from the waterfront. The subway does not stop at the cruise terminal; a bus connection or car is another option.
For JFK or LaGuardia, going across to Manhattan first is not automatically a better airport route. Compare the complete journey rather than using the ferry only to avoid one possible road queue.
Cape Liberty in New Jersey
Royal Caribbean's Cape Liberty terminal is at 4 Port Terminal Boulevard in Bayonne. Newark airport is a practical first option to compare because it keeps the arrival on the New Jersey side of the harbor. A Newark or Elizabeth hotel can suit a late flight; Jersey City can suit a stay with time for sightseeing.
A direct car service avoids changes with luggage. The published rail approach uses PATH and the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to 34th Street in Bayonne, followed by a taxi for the final port leg. The light rail does not deliver you to the cruise building.
Parking, arrival and return plans
All three locations have their own official parking arrangements. Our NYC parking and arrival guide covers current rates, access and the timing of your terminal arrival. Price the full stay and any transfer before comparing a private garage or hotel package.
For flights into the city, compare JFK, LaGuardia and Newark with the actual hotel and terminal journey included. Keep the airport return plan separate from the outbound trip; after docking you still need to leave the ship, collect bags and reach the pickup point.
Read your latest terminal notice before traveling. An earlier reservation or article may name a different location if the departure terminal changes. Our New York route guide covers destinations, and the winter sailing guide covers the colder departure days.
Frequently asked questions
Which airport should I use for Cape Liberty?
Compare Newark first because Cape Liberty is in Bayonne, New Jersey. The best flight still depends on your starting point and schedule, so include the hotel and road transfer when comparing airports. Flying into JFK or LaGuardia can work, but introduces a different journey across the region to the terminal.
Can I walk to the Manhattan cruise terminal from my hotel?
It depends on the actual hotel, pier and your luggage. A Midtown West address can put you on the appropriate side of Manhattan, but check the pedestrian route and weather before choosing to walk. A taxi may be more practical for several cases or limited mobility, even when the map distance looks short.
Can you take NYC Ferry to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal?
Yes. Use the South Brooklyn service to Red Hook/Atlantic Basin, beside the terminal. Wall Street/Pier 11 and East 34th Street are Manhattan boarding points on the current route. Check the schedule for your date, allow time for waiting and the final walk, and bring only bags you can manage through the transfer.
Can I take a train directly to Cape Liberty?
No train serves the terminal entrance. Royal Caribbean describes a route using PATH, the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to Bayonne’s 34th Street station and then a taxi to the port. Price and plan that final vehicle before choosing rail, especially with large cases, children or a boarding appointment that leaves little spare time.
