Are Cruise Cabins Soundproof?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Oct 4, 2026 · Cabins and Staterooms

No cabin should be treated as a promise of silence. You may hear neighbors, corridor activity, nearby venues or machinery, but reports vary even within a ship. The cabin's exact location and the guests around it matter; the room type alone cannot predict noise.

Check the surroundings

Find the room on the current deck plan, then look above, below and alongside it. Pools, gyms, entertainment venues, service areas and busy entrances are worth investigating if noise bothers you. A deck plan identifies possible sources; it does not measure sound insulation.

Search recent reports using the ship and cabin number, or nearby rooms. Treat a complaint as something to investigate, not proof that every room in that category has the same problem.

Connecting rooms are not uniformly noisy

Reddit passengers report both quiet and noisy connecting rooms. An older Cruise Critic discussion also contains conflicting experiences. Do not turn either discussion into a guaranteed result or a rule about every ship's construction.

If you do not need a connecting arrangement, you can compare alternatives. Confirm the actual layout, since adjacent rooms and a connected pair are different products.

Handle a problem aboard

Tell your cabin attendant or guest services what you hear and when it happens. Ask whether it can be investigated. A repair or room change depends on the cause and available space; it is not guaranteed.

Compare the broader cabin location checks before paying more. A suite, balcony or newer ship does not itself establish better soundproofing.
