What Happens if Your Cruise Ship Breaks Down?

A mechanical problem can mean a slower voyage, missed ports, an unscheduled stop or a cancelled cruise. The effect depends on the failure. Follow the crew's instructions and ask for the line's written plan. A change of itinerary and an early termination are different events with different refund implications.

What to do onboard

Emergency power does not mean every hotel service runs normally. Do not assume the air conditioning, lifts or plumbing are unaffected. The ship's actual announcements matter more than general reassurance about backup equipment. Know your muster instructions before an emergency.

Refunds depend on what happened

The passenger bill of rights published by Royal Caribbean provides a full refund for a trip cancelled because of mechanical failure and a partial refund when such a failure ends a voyage early. It also addresses transport and lodging when passengers must leave a terminated voyage. Read the contract and rights applying to your own line and booking; those promises do not make every missed port a full refund event.

For covered cruises departing the United States, Federal Maritime Commission rules address cancellations and departures delayed by three or more calendar days when a passenger declines the replacement or delayed voyage. These rules have a defined scope. They are not a promise of compensation for every inconvenience.

If the ship continues with a revised itinerary, see what happens after a skipped port. Ask separately about cancelled excursions, unused purchases, the cruise fare and any goodwill credit.

Do not assume your flights are covered

Ask the line which transport it will arrange and whether independent changes require approval. A refund of the cruise fare does not automatically reimburse every flight, hotel or lost workday. Before accepting a replacement sailing, compare its dates, cabin and travel costs.

Contact your insurer before substantial replacement spending where possible. Coverage depends on the policy and the cause of the disruption, not just the word cancellation. The insurance guide explains the distinctions to check.

If the promised refund does not arrive

Keep the cancellation notice, booking confirmation, contract, itemized charges and correspondence. Ask the line or your booking agent for a written breakdown and expected timing. For an eligible U.S. departure, the FMC offers passenger dispute assistance, but cannot compel a resolution to every customer service complaint.

Passenger discussions on Reddit show how easily a changed route, a refund and additional compensation get mixed together. Use reports from your sailing to identify unanswered questions, then rely on the written offer and applicable terms for your claim.

Frequently asked questions

Does a breakdown mean the ship must be evacuated?

No. A problem may be managed while the voyage continues, or it may require a port stop or disembarkation. The crew determines the response for the actual situation. Follow official instructions and tell the medical team about any immediate health needs rather than making decisions from passenger rumors.

Do I get a full refund for one missed port?

Not automatically. Missing a port while the cruise continues is different from cancelling the whole voyage or ending it early because of mechanical failure. Check your line contract and written notice. Excursions and unused purchases should be considered separately from the fare and any offered goodwill credit.

Should I buy my own replacement flight immediately?

Ask the line what it is arranging and what independent costs it will approve. Check your insurer as well. If you must make your own arrangements, keep receipts and the instructions you received. Do not assume all expenses will be reimbursed simply because the ship had a mechanical problem.
