What Happens if You Miss the Ship in Port?
If you return after the ship leaves, contact the port agent and cruise line immediately. Rejoining may require permission, documents and travel at your expense. Do not buy a flight to the next port until the line confirms that you can board there.
A cruise line excursion has different protection
Royal Caribbean's published rule says it will wait for a delayed excursion bought through the line or arrange your return to the ship at no expense if it cannot wait. That protection is not the same as taking an independent tour. Check your own line's terms and keep the excursion confirmation.
If you went ashore independently, do not assume the ship will wait or the line will pay to reunite you. An independent operator's return guarantee is its own contract, so read what it covers. Our excursion comparison explains that choice.
What to do at the terminal
- Contact the port agent and the cruise line using the numbers provided for that stop.
- Confirm where you can legally rejoin, what documents you need and whether your luggage or passport can be retrieved.
- Arrange accommodation and transport only after the plan is confirmed. Keep receipts and written instructions.
- Contact your insurer if a covered event may apply. Ask what authorization and evidence it requires before spending.
If you are abroad without the documents needed to travel, contact your country's consulate for assistance. Do not assume a birth certificate that worked for embarkation will let you fly internationally.
Prevent a clock mistake
Before leaving, confirm the all aboard time and the clock the ship is using. Your phone can change to local time automatically, and the ship's clock arrangements can change during a voyage. Ship time and local time need to be checked at each stop.
Allow time for traffic, queues and tender boats where relevant. A buffer is a planning choice, not a guarantee against every delay. Passenger reports about missed or nearly missed sailings cannot establish that a different ship will wait.
Frequently asked questions
Will insurance pay if I am late?
Only if the cause and expenses meet your policy’s conditions. Check the covered events, exclusions, limits and any need for advance approval; simply missing the ship does not establish coverage.
