Is a Balcony Worth the Money on a Cruise?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Oct 4, 2026 · Cabins and Staterooms

A balcony is worth the extra cost if you expect to use the space and prefer it to what else that money could buy. Compare the total price difference for your party, the actual balcony layout and the itinerary. It is a preference, not an automatic saving or a requirement for enjoying the sea.

Put a daily price on the upgrade

Here is hypothetical math in US dollars, not a fare quote. If two comparable cabin quotes differ by $600 for a seven night cruise, the balcony costs the party about $85.71 more per night. Decide whether you would rather spend that amount on the room, tours or keeping the vacation cheaper.

Use quotes for the same guests and benefits. If one includes drinks, different cancellation terms or a selected room, separate those differences before attributing the whole increase to the balcony.

What our fare data shows

Across 4455 sailings with both cabin types available, the median advertised balcony fare was $360.00 per person above the interior fare.

Sample scope: in Caribbean, with interior or balcony fares.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.

How these examples are calculated

One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation. Cabin comparisons use the same sailing and observation date. Advertised cabin-category minimums may carry different fare benefits; these are not guaranteed upgrade quotes.

Check what you are buying

Confirm the view, obstruction, size and furniture. On some Royal Caribbean ships, neighborhood balconies face spaces such as Central Park, Boardwalk or Surfside. They are a different product from an ocean facing balcony.

Read the actual veranda description on other lines too. Some designs combine windowed space with the cabin rather than providing the traditional separate outdoor area you may expect.

Consider how you will use it

If you like private outdoor time or want convenient access to scenery, the space may be valuable. If you plan to spend most of the trip in public areas or ashore, you may prefer another use for the money. Weather and ship conditions can affect access.

Passenger discussions show both preferences. They do not prove that every scenic route needs a balcony or that every port focused cruise makes one wasteful.

Check cabin location as well as the view: a balcony does not establish silence or freedom from motion. With children, follow the ship's safety rules and supervise access rather than treating a room category as a safety guarantee.

Compare the other cabin choices and the exact location checks before deciding.
