Holland America vs Princess: Which Is Better for Alaska?
Choose Holland America for Alaska if its route and sheltered viewing spaces fit the trip you want. Choose Princess if its particular ship, departure or land tour fits better. Both operate Glacier Bay itineraries. For a first trip, we would put the glacier day, hours ashore and departure logistics ahead of a general food or service ranking.
For 2027, start with these actual alternatives rather than comparing two cruise line homepages. Deployment details below were checked September 5, 2026.
Choose the route before the brand
- Seattle round trip: compare Holland America's Eurodam with Royal Princess if Glacier Bay is a priority. Holland America's Noordam program instead includes Dawes Glacier. The name Alaska Explorer alone does not tell you which glacier you will see.
- Vancouver round trip: Holland America has seven day Inside Passage cruises on Koningsdam and Zaandam. Princess has Emerald Princess sailings featuring either Glacier Bay or Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. Select the individual departure with the glacier you want.
- Vancouver to Whittier, or the reverse: Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam and Westerdam offer Glacier Discovery trips. Princess offers Voyage of the Glaciers on Coral, Island, Crown and Discovery Princess. Both programs include Glacier Bay, making this a useful comparison for travelers adding inland Alaska.
A round trip simplifies returning to your starting airport. A route ending at Whittier positions you for an inland tour but requires travel onward from the port. Our Alaska itinerary comparison explains that tradeoff.
Neither line guarantees Glacier Bay priority
Both Holland America and Princess hold National Park Service concession contracts for Glacier Bay. That does not mean every ship from either line enters the park, or that brand loyalty gets a sailing priority over another. Look for Glacier Bay National Park on the actual itinerary; a different glacier name is not an interchangeable substitute.
The park experience is scenic cruising, not a town visit where everyone disembarks. Weather and operating conditions can affect a planned visit. The Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier comparison explains what differs without declaring one mandatory for every traveler.
Cold weather makes the exact ship matter
Koningsdam's Lido Pool has a retractable glass roof, giving families a swimming option sheltered from poor weather. Holland America's ship page also identifies the separate Sea View Pool as an adult space. A pool photograph alone does not establish where children can swim.
Do not assume all Princess ships have the same pool arrangement. In a May 2026 Reddit comparison, passengers corrected the claim that every Princess pool is exposed, citing covered pools on Grand and Coral Princess. Those are passenger reports about particular ships, not evidence that another Princess vessel has the same facility.
Viewing space deserves equal attention. Cruise Critic forum contributors discussing these lines valued Holland America's Crow's Nest but warned that it can become crowded in Alaska. Before choosing a cabin without a balcony, locate indoor seating with windows and the outdoor decks you can reach easily. Our Alaska balcony guide weighs private viewing against the money available for excursions.
For children or a group spanning several generations, compare club age groups, the actual pool rules and the walk from your cabins to meals. A smaller ship is not automatically quieter in every room, and a newer ship does not guarantee easier viewing.
Port time can outweigh a cabin upgrade
Compare arrival and departure times for Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan alongside the tour you want. Two sailings calling at the same town may leave different amounts of usable time. Include tendering or shuttle time if shown for that departure; do not assume that a brand name guarantees the closest berth.
A balcony on a sailing that misses your preferred glacier or cannot fit your chosen excursion is a different purchase from a cheaper cabin on the right route. Price both complete trips before paying for the room upgrade.
Land tours need a separate comparison
Princess markets direct rail connections between the ship and the Denali area, with several lodge combinations. Holland America offers Denali itineraries and Alaska plus Yukon journeys. Choose by the overnight stops you actually want, the number of nights in each place and the included transport.
A longer tour can add transfers rather than another full day in a park. Read each day's sequence and identify which meals and excursions cost extra. The cruisetour guide helps compare an organized land package with independent travel.
How much should brand preference cost?
Compare the same dates, nights, cabin occupancy and desired extras, including travel to the port. Value a beverage or internet bundle only if you would buy what it covers. When both routes meet your priorities, a lower complete trip price is a sound reason to choose either line.
The Reddit discussion includes travelers favoring each line's food, while the Cruise Critic discussion gives different views on ship size and indoor space. Those reports help identify questions to investigate. They do not support a universal food winner or a rule that one line is always cheaper.
What our fare data shows
There are not enough fresh, matched sailings to identify a cheaper cruise line responsibly.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.
How these examples are calculated
One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation. Line comparisons require at least ten distinct sailings per line, in departure-month, region, duration and cabin groups containing at least three sailings from each line.
Frequently asked questions
Do all Holland America and Princess Alaska cruises visit Glacier Bay?
No. Both lines offer Glacier Bay itineraries, but other departures visit different glacier areas. For example, the announced 2027 Holland America Seattle program puts Glacier Bay on Eurodam and Dawes Glacier on Noordam. Match the named glacier to the exact departure before choosing between prices.
Which ship should a family compare first?
Start with ships on routes that meet your priorities, then compare the facilities your children will use. Koningsdam has a Lido Pool with a retractable roof. Check the specific Princess ship for its pool layout, club arrangements and cabin configuration rather than judging either entire fleet from one review.
Is a one way cruise better for a Denali visit?
A cruise between Vancouver and Whittier makes it possible to combine the coastal journey with an inland Alaska stay. Compare the transfer, rail and hotel sequence, not just the total tour length. Both lines sell land packages, but the nights and places included differ by itinerary.
