What Is the Best Cruise Line for Alaska?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 28, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · Alaska Cruising

Choose an Alaska cruise by its glacier route and time in port first, then by the ship. Princess and Holland America are strong starting points for Glacier Bay and land tours. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian suit families who want more ship activities. Celebrity suits travelers who want a contemporary ship, while Disney and Virgin offer very different family and adult experiences. Compare the actual sailing rather than treating a brand as a guarantee.

Princess and Holland America

Both have extensive Alaska programs and sell cruises with land tours. Look for Glacier Bay named on the itinerary if that is a priority, and compare the time at each port. Their experience in Alaska is useful, but a cruise fare does not automatically include a lodge stay or rail journey. Our guide to Alaska cruisetours explains the extra costs and travel days.

Glacier Bay access is controlled by the National Park Service. An authorized cruise line can still sell Alaska itineraries that do not enter the park. Read the daily route rather than assuming every ship with that logo visits.

For the two long established Alaska options, our Holland America versus Princess comparison goes into ship facilities, glacier routes and the full trip budget.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian

Royal Caribbean offers ships with family activities alongside its Alaska itineraries. The attractions vary substantially by ship, so check the specific vessel rather than expecting the largest ship's facilities everywhere. Celebrity is worth comparing if restaurants, lounges and cabin design matter more to your group than waterslides.

Norwegian offers flexible dining and ships with indoor observation spaces. Some Norwegian itineraries include Glacier Bay. Check berth locations as well as port names: a Ketchikan stop at Ward Cove requires transport into downtown, which changes how much sightseeing fits into a short call.

Carnival, Disney and Virgin

Carnival is worth including in a fare comparison, but it is not automatically the cheapest. Compare the same cabin type, travel dates and required extras across lines. A lower fare helps only if the route includes the places you want to see.

Disney combines its family programming with Alaska scenery. Decide whether that onboard experience justifies its actual premium for your party. Virgin carries adults aged 18 and over, which gives travelers seeking a ship without children another option. Verify the year, departure port and ship for both lines.

Smaller and luxury ships

Silversea, Regent and Oceania are also worth checking when their Alaska schedules match your dates. Higher fares may include items you would otherwise buy separately, but inclusions differ by line and fare. Compare excursions, drinks, gratuities and flights individually. Smaller ships can feel less busy, but neither ship size nor price guarantees wildlife sightings or access to a particular glacier.

The five checks before you book

Our Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska comparison explains the route choices. Choosing your month and pricing a balcony against excursions often affect the trip more than the brand name. The Alaska fare page shows the sailings we currently cover, not a census of the entire market.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.

How these examples are calculated

One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Alaska cruise visit Glacier Bay?

No. Glacier Bay requires authorized access, and even lines permitted to visit have other Alaska routes. Look for the park by name in the daily itinerary. Hubbard Glacier, College Fjord and Endicott Arm are separate scenic experiences, not alternative names for Glacier Bay.

Does Virgin Voyages sail Alaska?

Virgin offers Alaska sailings for adults aged 18 and over. Check the specific season and departure date before planning around a ship. An adult policy tells you who can board; it does not guarantee a quiet pool deck or the same itinerary as another cruise line.

Which Alaska cruise should a family choose?

Compare the children’s ages with the activities on the actual ship, then check glacier viewing and port hours. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Disney are useful starting points for families, while Princess and Holland America can also suit families focused on the destination. The best choice depends on what your group wants to do.
