First Alaska Cruise: What You Need to Know
For a first Alaska cruise, choose the route and named glacier stops before the cabin upgrade. Then check port hours, flights and the excursions that matter to you. Two sailings described as Alaska cruises can offer quite different trips.
Start with the route
Compare a round trip with a one way sailing between Vancouver and an Alaska port such as Whittier. A round trip returns to its starting port; a one way route can fit an interior land extension. Price the flights and ground transfers before deciding which is simpler for you.
The route guide explains that choice. Do not assume every sailing includes Glacier Bay. Check the actual daily itinerary for its named scenic cruising areas.

These are advertised cruise fares, not a booking quote or a full trip budget. The agent must confirm availability, fare terms and the final price; travel, insurance, gratuities and optional extras may cost more.
How these examples are calculated
One lowest eligible advertised cabin fare per sailing; USD per person with taxes included, based on two guests sharing one cabin. Observations must be no more than two days old. Examples are the lowest matching totals in our catalog, not a claim about the entire market. Prices are rounded in our website export; availability and optional extras require confirmation.
Plan around port time
Choose the activities you most want, then check whether their total duration fits the ship's port call. Include transport from the berth, check in and return time. A short call at a port with your preferred tour is not equivalent to a full day there.
For flights or small boat tours, read the operator's cancellation policy and prepare a simpler alternative. Weather can change the available options; a backup activity is not guaranteed to have space.
Budget the complete trip
Add cruise fare, applicable service charges, flights, hotels, transfers and chosen excursions. Compare identical occupancy and cabin categories before judging a fare. The cheapest advertised cabin does not establish the cheapest complete holiday.
A balcony buys private outdoor viewing. Compare its actual premium with your other priorities and the ship's public viewing areas.
Pack for the coast
Bring layers, rain protection and footwear suited to your booked activities. Alaska's weather differs by region; interior summer temperatures are not a reliable packing guide for a coastal glacier day.
If you want Denali
Check the exact land itinerary, included park tour and usable time at each stop. Our cruisetour guide explains the separate cost and the current 2027 park road plan. Do not assume a cruise fare includes the land portion.
