Cozumel Cruise Port Guide
Cozumel offers reef excursions, beach visits and downtown San Miguel. Check your berth first: Punta Langosta is downtown, while International Pier and Puerta Maya are farther south. Transport needs depend on both the pier and your chosen activity.
Reef diving and snorkeling
The reefs sit inside a protected marine park, and current driven drift diving is the island's signature style: you drift with the current over the coral instead of swimming against it, so ask the operator about the current, depth and experience needed for the exact dive. Snorkeling trips typically reach shallower sections of the same reef system by boat.
Visibility and currents vary. Follow the marine park’s rules and your guide’s instructions, including not touching coral or wildlife.
Chankanaab
Before booking a Chankanaab visit, check the exact admission package, transport, snorkeling equipment and paid activities. Do not assume a park admission includes every experience advertised there.
Beach clubs near the pier
A string of beach clubs lines the coast near the piers, with different admission and spending arrangements. Check whether your quote includes loungers, a pool, food or drinks. Which clubs are open, what the pass includes, and how good they are shift often enough that we will not name particular ones here. Some sell transfers, while others require you to arrange and pay for a taxi, so compare the complete price.
Compare a beach club day pass against a boat based snorkel trip before you book. One gets you comfort and easy food, the other gets you more time actually in open water, and the right pick depends on what you actually want from the day, a tradeoff we cover more broadly in booking excursions through the line or independently.
Confirm transport and inclusions
Confirm the total taxi fare, passenger count and return arrangement before setting off. For a tour or beach pass, check what is included and whether transfers cost extra. Treat shopping stops as part of the itinerary when comparing how much sightseeing time you get.
San Gervasio for a change of pace
San Gervasio is a Maya archaeological site inland from the coast, once dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, and offers an alternative to a beach day. Reaching it takes a taxi or a tour, and the visit includes outdoor walking, so bring water and sun protection.
It is a good pick if you have already done a reef day on a previous visit, or want an archaeological visit without the ferry journey to the mainland.
Planning your day
Compare activity duration and transport time with your port hours. Pick one focus and keep ship time vs local time in mind, since Cozumel does not always shift its clock in step with a ship sailing from the mainland United States. Bring enough small cash for tips, shuttles, and shopping, covered in how much cash to bring on a cruise, and compare notes with our Nassau port guide if your cruise visits both.
Check whether your berth is Punta Langosta downtown, International Pier or Puerta Maya farther south. A downtown walk has different transport needs from each. Mainland excursions add a ferry and onward travel; do not treat a trip to Tulum as a quick extension of an island beach day.
