Can You Stay on the Ship During Port Days?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 29, 2026 · Updated Oct 4, 2026 · Ports and Excursions

Yes, you can usually stay aboard during a port call. You do not need to buy an excursion or explain why you prefer a day on the ship. Follow any required immigration or clearance instructions, particularly between consecutive cruises.

What stays available

Included food and onboard services remain available, but individual restaurants, pools and activities can have different hours from a sea day. Check the daily program before planning around a particular venue. The main dining room may not open for lunch.

Casino and shop hours depend on the port and local rules. Do not assume every casino is closed throughout every port call or that every attraction operates all day.

Is the ship quieter?

Passengers on Reddit describe quieter pools and dining areas while others are ashore. That can make a port day a useful time to read, swim or rest, but it does not guarantee empty facilities. Other guests may have the same plan, and maintenance or drills can close an area.

Check the actual price and available appointments if you want a spa treatment. A port day discount is an offer to compare, not a benefit included with staying aboard.

You can split the day

You can take a short walk ashore and return early instead of choosing between a full excursion and no visit. Confirm when the gangway operates and use the ship's stated return time. Our ship time guide explains the clock check.

If you already paid for an excursion, check its cancellation deadline. Choosing not to go ashore does not automatically refund that booking or part of your cruise fare.

On a busy itinerary, a rest day can be a reasonable tradeoff. Compare what you would actually miss in the port guide, then choose the day that suits your energy and interests.
