Can You Bring a Dog on a Cruise?
Most ocean cruise holidays do not allow pet dogs. A useful exception is Cunard's Queen Mary 2, which accepts dogs and cats in kennels on eligible transatlantic crossings. Service dogs follow a separate accessibility process. Decide which of those situations applies before booking a passenger cabin.
The Queen Mary 2 pet option
This is a kennel arrangement, not a pet staying in your stateroom or accompanying you around the ship. Ask Cunard to confirm space, your pet's size requirements, visiting arrangements and the exact eligible voyage. A passenger cabin being available does not mean a kennel is available.
Cunard's UK kennel terms for bookings made from May 18, 2026 quote US $2,500 per kennel, per voyage, in addition to passenger fares. An animal that needs two kennels costs more. Confirm the terms and total for your booking market before paying, and arrange the destination's animal entry documents. Fathom Fares does not currently track Cunard fares.
Passenger accounts include both positive crossings and pets that found the kennel routine stressful. Discuss your own animal's needs with a veterinarian and ask Cunard practical questions about visits, feeding and exercise. Do not assume a photograph of a pet on deck means it can spend the voyage beside you.
Traveling with a service dog
Contact the line's accessibility team before booking. Royal Caribbean, for example, accepts task trained service dogs but excludes pets and emotional support dogs. Its rules also say the dog cannot be left unattended in the stateroom and that crew are not responsible for its care.
That matters ashore. Ship approval does not establish permission to enter every country, and a dog unable to go ashore cannot simply be left alone while its handler takes a tour. Confirm the arrangements for each port, the relief area on your ship and any excursion restrictions.
Ask for the exact health documents and deadlines for the itinerary. Animal entry paperwork is separate from the traveler's passport requirements. The line's accessibility team is also the right starting point for other access arrangements; a general pet policy does not answer every disability related request.
If your pet stays home
Price care for the full absence, including travel days and a delay buffer. Confirm the sitter or boarding facility's requirements, emergency contact and veterinary arrangements. Add that cost when deciding when and what to book. A cheap fare may not be the cheaper trip once several extra days of pet care are included.
Frequently asked questions
Can my pet stay in my cabin on Queen Mary 2?
The pet travel option is a kennel booking on an eligible transatlantic crossing. It does not allow a pet to live in your passenger cabin or use normal guest areas. Service dogs are handled separately, so confirm the appropriate arrangements directly with Cunard.
Can emotional support dogs cruise as service dogs?
Do not assume that they can. Royal Caribbean explicitly excludes emotional support dogs and pets from its service dog policy. Ask the specific line's accessibility team about your circumstances before booking; a vest or a pet travel certificate does not by itself establish eligibility.
What if a service dog cannot enter a port?
Discuss the situation with the line before sailing. Royal Caribbean prohibits leaving a service dog unattended in the cabin, and staff do not provide dog care. A restriction on going ashore therefore affects the handler's plans as well as the animal's entry paperwork.
