Civitavecchia is Rome's cruise port, but it is not Rome — the old city center is about 50 miles away, roughly an hour by direct train to Roma Termini, and treating this as a walk-off-the-ship-into-Rome stop is the single most common mistake first-time visitors make here. Even within the port itself, distances run long: depending on berth, walking from the ship to the port gate can take 20-25 minutes with luggage, longer in summer heat, and most travelers use the free shuttle bus that runs between the cruise terminals and the gate rather than walking it. Budget real transfer time either way — this is a two-step trip, not a stroll into town. For a Rome-focused port day, the direct train beats a private transfer on time reliability alone, since traffic on the Rome approach roads is the more common point of delay than the train ever is.
