San Juan Cruise Port Guide

Check your San Juan pier before planning the day. Downtown berths provide access to Old San Juan, while the Pan American piers are across the bay and require separate transport. Plan around your actual arrival and departure times.

Which Pier You Get Changes the Day

The downtown piers put you within a few minutes' walk of Old San Juan, though specific attractions or activities may still need tickets or reservations. The Pan American piers are a different story. They sit across the bay on Isla Grande, separate from the Old San Juan piers, which is a taxi or shuttle rather than a stroll. Your cruise documents name the terminal, so check yours before you plan on walking off into the historic district. The streets there are lined with blue cobblestones, pastel colored buildings, small galleries, and local restaurants.

The San Juan port page shows which upcoming sailings call here if you want to check ahead of time.

El Morro and the Forts

The two big forts, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal, sit at opposite ends of the old city and are covered by a $10 entrance ticket valid for both forts for 24 hours, as checked October 4, 2026. Payment is cashless. El Morro in particular has sweeping views over the water and huge grassy lawns where locals fly kites, so check the walking route from your starting point. Give yourself at least an hour if you want to actually explore either fort rather than just admire it from outside.

Beach visits

Condado and Isla Verde are options for a beach visit. Check transport from your specific pier and the current surf and rip current forecast before entering the water; a nearby resort does not make a beach safe for swimming.

A Few Practical Notes

English is widely spoken around the cruise piers and in Old San Juan, and the US dollar is the currency, so there is no exchange rate to figure out. Sidewalks in the old city are cobblestone and can be uneven, which is worth knowing if you are traveling with a stroller or have mobility concerns, and comfortable shoes make a real difference over a few hours of walking.

Documents depend on the whole cruise

US citizens do not need a passport for a domestic flight to Puerto Rico, although TSA identification requirements apply. That does not settle the documents for a cruise visiting foreign countries. Check the whole route and your line's requirements before relying on closed loop rules.

Use your actual port hours

If your itinerary includes an evening or overnight in San Juan, check the return arrangements before planning dinner ashore. Do not assume an overnight stay from the port name alone.

If your cruise also stops in Grand Cayman, that port runs very differently, with a tender ride standing between you and the beach instead of a walk off the ship.

Keep the posted all aboard time in view while exploring. Our ship time guide explains why your phone may show a different clock from the ship.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a passport to cruise to San Juan?

A domestic visit to Puerto Rico and an international cruise are different journeys. US citizens do not need a passport for a direct mainland flight to San Juan, but must meet TSA identification rules. Your cruise may require a passport because of its other ports, start and end points or cruise line policy.
