Northbound vs Southbound Alaska Cruises: Does It Matter?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 28, 2026 · Updated Oct 4, 2026 · Alaska Cruising

Choose northbound or southbound by the exact itinerary, flight connections and where you want the land portion of your trip. Direction alone does not establish a cheaper fare or better scenery. Compare the named glacier visits as well as the order of ports.

What changes with direction

A northbound one way cruise from Vancouver finishes in Alaska; a southbound sailing reverses that overall journey. The port list and scenic cruising are not necessarily identical in reverse. Check both daily itineraries rather than assuming only the order changes.

Where a land tour fits

Southbound can put your Alaska land stay before the cruise, while northbound can put it afterward. Check transfer days and hotel arrival times. One Holland America passenger describing a May 2026 trip preferred land first because the transfers were tiring, but that is an individual preference.

Our cruisetour guide explains how to compare actual usable land days and inclusions.

Flights and port transfers

Price both directions from your home airport. Include any hotel night and the transfer between the Alaska cruise port and airport. Whittier is a separate location from Anchorage; confirm the transfer schedule and the earliest flight the line recommends.

Check travel documents for your nationality and the cruise and flights. An itinerary involving Canada should not be planned using a US domestic flight ID rule alone.

Choosing a cabin side

Do not buy a cabin solely because someone says northbound means starboard or southbound means port. The route, obstructions and ship movements matter. A balcony provides one viewing angle; public areas may let you move between sides.

If either direction fits, compare the complete price, glacier stops and port hours. The round trip versus one way guide covers the larger route choice.
