How to Cancel a Cruise and Get Your Money Back

To cancel a cruise, ask the seller handling your reservation for the exact refund and penalty under your booking terms, then submit a formal cancellation. Refunds depend on more than the words refundable deposit: the fare, cancellation date, booking market, extras and agency charges can all matter.

Get the calculation first

Open your confirmation and the cancellation schedule that applies to it. Do not use a generic 75 or 90 day final payment rule; deadlines vary. Carnival's published guidance, for example, distinguishes ordinary prepayment cancellation from promotions with nonrefundable deposits or fares.

Request separate figures for cash returned, money retained, future cruise credit and prepaid extras. Ask about government charges and supplier fees individually rather than assuming everything labeled port fees is refundable. Deposit rules are only part of that calculation.

Insurance is a separate claim

Standard trip cancellation insurance can reimburse eligible losses for the policy's covered reasons. A change of mind is not automatically covered, and illness or job loss must meet the actual definitions and exclusions.

Cancel for Any Reason can provide partial reimbursement when its purchase, insured cost and cancellation deadlines are met. It is not unlimited coverage up to departure. Read your certificate and the insurance comparison before relying on it.

Submit and keep records

Contact your agency if it holds the booking, or the line for a direct reservation. Do not rely on missing a payment to produce the result you want. Get a cancellation number and written breakdown, then retain confirmations and supporting documents for any insurance claim.

Ask where and when each refund will be sent. Extras can be processed separately, and a future cruise credit is not a cash refund. Changing dates can also trigger penalties, so compare that option before authorizing it.

If the problem is a lower fare elsewhere, an eligible price adjustment may be worth checking. It is not guaranteed to preserve your original benefits.

Frequently asked questions

Does a refundable deposit mean every payment comes back?

Not necessarily. It describes the deposit under specified terms, not every charge in the reservation. The cancellation date, fare restrictions, agency fees and separately purchased services can change the result. Ask for an itemized cancellation quote before assuming the entire amount paid will return as cash.

Will a nonrefundable deposit become future cruise credit?

Only if the fare terms or a specific concession provide that result. Some amounts are simply forfeited. If credit is offered, check its value, eligible traveler, booking and sailing deadlines, and permitted charges. Do not treat a restricted future booking credit as equivalent to money returned to your account.

Can insurance help without Cancel for Any Reason?

Yes, standard cancellation coverage may reimburse eligible losses when the reason meets the policy terms. You will need the required evidence and must follow notification deadlines. Cancel for Any Reason is an additional option with its own limits, not the only way an insured cancellation can be covered.
