Greek Isles Cruise Guide
Choose a Greek Isles cruise by its actual island calls and hours ashore. Routes can include Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete or Corfu, plus mainland ports or Turkey. A seven night sailing from Athens does not guarantee four or five islands, and departures from Italy are not necessarily ten nights or longer.
Compare spring and autumn for sightseeing and summer for your school or beach plans. Weather and wind still vary across the islands.
The islands ships actually visit
- Santorini. The caldera views everyone comes for, and almost always a tender port. More on that below.
- Mykonos. Whitewashed lanes, windmills, beaches, and nightlife. Ships dock or tender depending on the day.
- Rhodes. A walled medieval old town steps from the pier. Check the walking route to the sights you want.
- Crete. Usually Heraklion for the Knossos ruins, sometimes Chania.
- Corfu. Green and Venetian influenced, common on Adriatic routes.
Some routes add Patmos or mainland ports such as Katakolon for Olympia and Volos. They are not all island calls.
The Santorini tender reality
Santorini has no cruise dock. Ships anchor in the caldera and run tenders to a small landing below the cliffs. From there you take the cable car up or climb several hundred steep steps.
Cable car queues can consume part of the visit. Waiting times vary, so plan around the ship’s tender instructions and leave a return buffer. If the wind picks up, tender operations slow down and occasionally get cancelled. Summer meltemi winds are another reason not to assume a beach forecast guarantees easy tender conditions.
Wear real shoes rather than flip flops if you plan to take the steps, and carry water. It is a genuine climb.
Sailing from Athens vs a western Med start
Round trips from Piraeus can focus on Greece, but read the list carefully. Royal Caribbean’s published seven night Greece and Turkey route on Rhapsody of the Seas in August 2027 includes Mykonos and Santorini along with Turkish calls and a sea day. The departure port alone does not tell you the island count.
Italy departures can also visit Greek islands within a week. Compare the island calls, sea days and flight costs instead of assuming an Athens departure is always better. If you want a wider sampler, the first Mediterranean cruise guide covers that style of trip.
Either way, arrive a day or two early. Athens gives you the Acropolis before you even board. Check the actual port and cruise terminal before booking transfers. Piraeus and Lavrion are different ports, and road journey times depend on your starting point and traffic.
Choose the season around your plans
Summer can be hot and windy. Spring and autumn may suit long walks, but neither guarantees quiet ports, cheaper fares or swimming weather. Check the local forecast, seasonal openings and the Mediterranean season guide for the tradeoffs.
Which lines sail the Greek Isles
Compare the actual itinerary across mainstream, premium and luxury lines. Our tracked fares are a comparison sample, not every Greek cruise option. Piraeus is a useful starting point, but some Athens marketed cruises use Lavrion instead.
A smaller ship may reduce the number sharing its tenders, but port queues depend on every ship visiting that day. Recent passenger reports describe both short and lengthy waits at Santorini. A tour that avoids the uphill cable car may still end in Fira with a cable car return; check both directions.
