Can a Travel Agent Get Me Onboard Credit and Perks?

By The Fathom Fares Team · Published Aug 28, 2026 · Updated Sep 5, 2026 · Booking With an Agent

Yes, an agency can offer onboard credit, prepaid gratuities or other benefits on eligible bookings. The offer may come from the agency, a supplier promotion or a group arrangement. No particular perk or amount is guaranteed just because you use an agent.

Get the actual offer

Ask for the amount, whether it is per person or per cabin, when it appears and what conditions apply. Confirm whether a dinner includes both travelers and whether a gratuity benefit covers the full charge for your cabin and sailing.

There is no reliable universal credit table by cabin type. Fare rules, promotions and agency choices differ. how agents get paid explains why the credit amount does not reveal the commission behind a reservation.

Credit is not unrestricted cash

Some credit is refundable and some expires. Eligible uses can exclude gratuities, casino play, predeparture purchases or other charges. Read the rules for the specific credit rather than assuming every balance works alike.

Value it against purchases you planned to make. A credit toward something you would never buy is not the same saving as a lower cruise bill. Our guide to using onboard credit covers the restrictions to check.

Compare the whole booking

When comparing agency and direct prices, match the fare conditions and calculate the cash payable separately from extras. Group rates or agency charges may mean the underlying quotes differ too.

Ask whether a later price adjustment changes the benefit and whether offers can be combined. An agency credit and a supplier promotion do not automatically stack. If you already booked directly, check transferring a direct booking before assuming you can add another seller’s offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is agent supplied onboard credit always nonrefundable?

No. Refundability depends on how the credit is supplied and the rules attached to it. Ask for written confirmation of eligible uses and what happens to an unused balance. Do not assume a credit can pay gratuities or be withdrawn as cash merely because an agency provided it.

Will a suite always get more perks than an inside cabin?

No. A larger fare may support a different offer, but there is no guaranteed benefit scale by cabin type. Supplier promotions, group arrangements and agency choices matter too. Compare the actual written benefits for your sailing instead of estimating them from someone else’s booking.

Can a price drop reduce my promised credit?

It can if the benefit depends on the original fare or promotion. Before authorizing a reprice, ask for the new total and all remaining benefits in writing. Include any change fee in the comparison, and keep your earlier confirmation until you have checked the replacement.
